The Natural History of Caterpillar-Ant Associations

چکیده
Abstract The caterpillars of many Lepidoptera are neither attacked nor tended by ants but nevertheless appear to be obligately ant-associated and benefit from the enemy-free space created ants. Obligate myrmecophiles that do not attract through stridulatory or chemical signaling limited habitats where reliably present for other reasons, either among ant-attended hemipterans, on ant-plants, around ant nests. Particularly in tropics, obligate associates passively coexist with more diverse than previously recognized, including, example, hundreds African species lycaenid subfamily Poritiinae. Mutualists parasites have been reported eleven families: Tineidae, Tortricidae, Cyclotornidae, Coleophoridae, Crambidae, Erebidae, Notodontidae, Hesperiidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae. Altogether, myrmecophily has originated at least 30 times Lepidoptera, groups may remain undiscovered. butterfly families Lycaenidae Riodinidae contain vast majority species: larvae 3841 (71%) ~5390 described 308 (20%) ~1562 known inferred ant-associated, both possess specialized, convergently developed exocrine glands devices communicate Many caterpillar-ant relationships characterized as mutualisms actually parasitic, can manipulate ultimately exert a fitness cost. In family highly specialized associations found largely Old World Australia, Southern Africa, stoichiometry soil micronutrients, particularly sodium phosphorus, climate, host plants, geography all selectively shape associations.

The Natural History of the Arboreal Ant, Crematogaster ashmeadi
The arboreal ant, Crematogaster ashmeadi Emery (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is the most dominant arboreal ant in the pine forests of the coastal plain of northern Florida. The majority of pine trees harbor a colony of these ants. The colonies inhabit multiple chambers abandoned by bark-mining caterpillars, especially those of the family Cossidae, in the outer bark of living pines. They also inhab...
متن کاملLycaenid Caterpillar Secretions Manipulate Attendant Ant Behavior
Mutualistic interactions typically involve the exchange of different commodities between species. Nutritious secretions are produced by a number of insects and plants in exchange for services such as defense. These rewards are valuable metabolically and can be used to reinforce the behavior of symbiotic partners that can learn and remember them effectively. We show here novel effects of insect ...

Dolichoderus mariae Forel, (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is an uncommon, monomorphic but locally abundant, reddish-brown ant of peculiar nesting habits, whose range includes most of the eastern USA. In north Florida the ant excavates soil under wiregrass clumps or other plants with fibrous roots to form a single, large, shallow, conical or ovoid chamber broadly open to the surface around the plant ...
